Increase your traffic by visiting your MyBlogLog Community…

I was recently looking over our Google Analytics statistics, and I noticed that a decent amount of traffic comes from users who find our community page at MyBlogLog. To be honest, I was a little surprised by how much traffic it really was. In our previous article, 20 Ways to Promote your Site for under 10 Bucks, I mentioned community sites as a way to improve traffic. For the most part, I always thought of MyBlogLog as a fun way to see who visits your site and I didn’t really give it much credit as a means of actually generating new traffic.

It turns out though, people do browse around the communities and they do check out sites. The way MyBlogLog is setup, anyone can join anyone else’s community without needing confirmation from that person. This is a really great opportunity for anyone who is just starting out. If you want to spread the word that you exist, all you need to do is find some communities that are interested in the same things you are, and join up!

MyBlogLog supports the joining of up to 15 communities per day and you can easily find that many to join for weeks and weeks once you become a member. Whenever new visitors show up in the MyBlogLog widget in our black sidebar, I usually take the time and visit their community. I do it because I’m generally interested in the people who visit my site but it’s also an opportunity to potentially join their community as well. If I like their site or their subject matter, I join up. It’s completely painless.

If you keep that up, pretty soon you’ll start finding your list of joined communities has grown well into the hundreds. This means that on hundreds of sites all over the web, a link to your site is no more then one click away at all times. To me, that sounds like a great opportunity for people to basically stumble upon your site over time, and it appears to really work.

There are two things that you can look into that will improve your chances of improving your MyBlogLog traffic. Anyone who has a fairly new site (with less than 50 members) still has room on their first page for new community members. Since MyBlogLog sorts community members in order from oldest to newest, if you get in on time you’ll always be on the first page. This is key to attracting new visitors.

Second, you really need to find yourself a unique image. The use of head shots is so over done, that a lot of times it just doesn’t grab enough attention to make people click. If you find the right image, you can easily stand out in the crowded sea of members and almost beg people to click. I doubt I’ve found the right image yet for myself, but I’ll definitely keep trying new images until I do. If you absolutely feel the need to use a head shot image, try to make it stand out. Be a little artistic with colors that are visually noticeable. You’d be surprised how much that can improve your community visitors. Not only does this help you when joining communities, but it also makes you stand out in every MyBlogLog Widget on every site you visit.

Overall, this is a very simple thing to do, and if you’re anything like me you are constantly checking out people who visit you anyway. Might as well just make an effort to join communities you’ve enjoyed. It has the nice side effect in the fact that many of the communities you do join will join you right back :)
