How to give your FeedBurner feedcount chicklet a facelift

As I mentioned in our Top 15 Wordpress Plugins discussion, Bookmark Bliss uses the FeedBurner Feed Replacement plugin to take care of all our RSS feed hosting. FeedCount from FeedBurner is a wonderful way to help promote your site. It provides your users with a dynamic graphical display that indicates how many feed’s you currently have in circulation through FeedBurner (i.e. how many subscribers).

To activate and customize your FeedCount chicklet you must log into your FeedBurner account and select the “Publicize” tab. From here, you have the option to activate the FeedCount service along the left hand side. Once it’s up and running, you will be able to customize your chicklet. While the chicklet is highly customizable in color and animated text, there is no option to change the actual displayed text of ”readers” that shows by default. We wanted to make our chicklet a little bit unique from other sites and with this simple modification you can do the same.

Look for the chicklet graphic URL similar to this:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/Fuzzyfuture?bg=000000&fg=FFFFFF&anim=0

All you need to do is append the following piece of code to the URL:

“&label=<TEXT YOU WANT TO SHOW>”

For example,

&label=fans

&label=addicts

&label=readers

So to help turn your visitors into regular readers, throw up a customized FeedCount beside the standard feed icon! If your users can see your community growing, they will be encouraged to contribute more comments and return on a regular basis.

Have fun and enjoy! We’ve decided to go with fans ourselves :)

It’s actually &label=

Your editor must have changed the ampersand into the web-safe encoding. I hope this comment shows up correctly.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve changed it up now so hopefully it is showing up properly for everyone.
